Bol
Bol is probably the beach/harbor town that we liked the best. It is wonderfully beautiful, laid-back, and just civilized enough to have some good restaurants and a bit of shopping. The winery Stina was a fantastic experience.
Pučišća
I have read various commentaries that say Pučišća is one of the prettiest places in Europe. I agree. It’s just breathtaking, day or night. [youtube=zwXZ2TtJFMk] Be careful of that first step! Toys The view from our aparment. Sunset
Zadar
I expected Zadar to be better than it was. The market was disappointing (after reading such good things), but we did buy and cook a whole red snapper that was just delicious. More or less the entire old city has been given over to tourism, which is a shame because it’s really pretty. The Archeologic...
Rab
Rab was kind of a no big deal island. We stayed at a B and B run by an exceptionally kind woman, so it was worth it. On the way Succulent succulents. The view from breakfast.
Mali Losinj
This is a very nice little seaside town. In retrospect, we should have stayed longer. Next time, I guess. A restaurant floor mosaic. Yet more steps. One thing that has impressed both of us in Croatia is the quantity and quality of stone and tile work.
Rijeka
We are now in Rijeka, which seems to be a great place, but it is pissing down with rain.
Zagreb
We had another pleasant drive from Dobrna to Zagreb. Rolling hills, forests, farms, and good roads again. Zagreb is an interesting city. It’s very artsy and design-oriented in an avant-garde/Bauhaus kind of way. There is no mistaking it for a Western European city. The public transportation is excel...
Dobrna
The drive from Trieste to Dobrna was just beautiful and very relaxing (excellent roads and very little traffic). We stayed at a spa resort there. It was a bit old-fashioned and dated, but it’s very nice and calm. Dobrna is also near the most important hops-growing area in Slovenia. Nearby is a town...
More Trieste
Trieste is one of those corners of Europe that’s been tossed back and forth. It’s been under the rule of the Romans, the Venetians, the Habsburg Empire, and the Italian kingdom. Then after WWII, it became a free territory for a few years, before being split between Italy and Yugoslavia (now Croatia...
Trieste
What a delightful city this is, trash bins and all. I’ll post more tomorrow. [youtube=GSUKlr_35lA]
Day 1
Off we go.
